How Much Water Should I Drink A Day To Optimise My Energy

One of the most common questions I get is how much water to drink a day. There’s a lot of information out there saying 8 glasses or 2 litres, but looking to the science of how our body uses water that doesn’t cut it (I’ll tell you why below). Also I believe every person needs a different amount of water, unique to them, which I’ll explain to you also.

How Much Water Should I Drink A Day?

To put things in perspective let’s look at some stats about water loss in our body. Through the body’s channels of elimination we lose at least 2L of water everyday. On average about 500mL water through sweat, about 500 ml through breathing and about 1400mL through pooping and peeing.

So we should be at least replacing that amount of water every single day, and even putting more in so that we can hydrate.

Often people feel tired because there’s an internal drought happening in their organs. Their pancreas, liver, kidneys or adrenal glands become burnt out and not working because of this dehydration.

So one of the best things to have more energy (along with proper breathing) is to drink water!

Now the formula that has been given to me, and that I live by, is to drink 1 Liter per 22 kg of body weight per day. I personally weigh about 78 kilos and I drink 4 liters everyday, but if I wanted to drink 3 and a half I think that would be good as well. Of course it also depends on where you live in terms of climate, how active you are, and things like that, but a good but a good rule of thumb is about one liter per 22 kg of body weight.

Now that might seem like a lot if you are overweight, but by drinking more water it actually helps that weight come off, because being correctly hydrated helps to eliminates fats and do all kinds of beautiful things in the body to kick up metabolism.

When you’re fasting or doing a 4 Day Colon Cleanse. I recommend you drink even more water to help with the elimination of toxins. When you are colon cleansing you need to have at least 1L of water between each serve of colon cleanse otherwise you run the risk of becoming dehydrated and not feel so great. I can’t emphasise the importance of hydration enough.

The Most Common Mistake When It Comes To Drinking Water

I know you might think it’s ridiculous to say there is a way to drink water, but I’m being serious here! I’m saying this because I know many people who carry a water a bottle with them and occasionally sip water throughout the day. So over the period of a day they may drink 1L or 1.5L. Now when you look at the guide I gave you above it’s not really that much water.

The thing is, that just by sipping water occasionally is not enough.

I often get people at my events and retreats to guzzle an entire litre of water and see how they feel, and it’s interesting within about 10 to 15 minutes the level of energy and alertness that starts happening in the room. Yes you might go to the bathroom, but hey it’s a natural process!

People are just so much more awake and focused because drinking plain pure water is the best way to hydrate the brain. The brain requires around 1 - 1.5L water per day. We should be recycling the water in our brain at least every 24 to 48 hours, and the only we can do that is by drinking plain pure water. Not tea, not juice, just plain water.

If you ever experience headaches or other things going on it means that you’re chronically dehydrated. And the best thing to do is to start drinking plain pure water (with a pinch of sea salt to help the hydration process).

Of course it’s not just the brain that’s affected by dehydration but the whole body.

Our blood is composed of about 83% percent water. Your blood is the ‘lifeline’ of your body, so you want your blood to be healthy. Being hydrated makes sure your blood is the right consistency, not too thick or not so thin that it prevents clotting. Being properly hydrated also makes sure you have a good blood volume which fully expands your blood vessels to move blood through your body.

Every single organ in the human body should be amply hydrated for optimal health including digestion. So many people come to me with digestive problems that are related in some way to dehydration. One of my number one tips is to get up in the morning drink a litre of water and go for a walk (I recommend a 45-60min walk). Typically within about 20 to 30 minutes you’ll have to go to the bathroom and have good poop - and feel amazing! If you wanna know more about what healthy poop likes like and how to achieve it (and I mean who wouldn’t!) you can read more here.

Does Drinking Cold Water Boost My Metabolism?

There’s some debate of the best temperature of water to drink. For me this depends on the time of day.  I believe to boost metabolism you should drink ice cold first thing in the morning. This is what some of the oldest living people in the world do.  Cultures like the Abkhazians of Russia and Hans of people in Pakistan are known to hike down to freezing cold rivers and bathe in and drink that cold water. They then carry that water for the rest of the day allowing it to warm up. I think this idea is brilliant natural intelligence.

Because even though cold water in the morning is good to boost metabolism, it’s not so great for digestion as it stops the production hydrochloric acid in the stomach. It’s the hydrochloric acid which activates something pepsinogen (or pepsin) to digest and breakdown different foods, therefore if you’re drinking freezing cold water it actually slows that process and stops the stomach acid. So keep in mind ice cold water is good for first thing in the morning, but not throughout the day. A good way to help digestion is by adding a little bit of apple cider vinegar. Put about a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar into maybe an 8 ounce glass and drink that before meals. It will activate the stomach acid to help you breakdown the foods more properly, it's a beautiful thing.

Ok, so now you know how much water to drink, how to drink it and what temperature. If you love this kind of information and want to know more sign up for one of my Heal Thy Self Express Weekend Workshops.

It takes time for the body to get to an ideal point of hydration too, literally weeks of drinking of the right amount of water. So keep it up, and know that the benefits are increasing.
