Why people don’t put into action what they know

Do you spend a lot of time researching, asking questions, and finding information on how to heal yourself?

If the answer is yes, that’s great. You’re clearly passionate about improving your health and finding answers.

But… are you also putting that knowledge into action?

Today I want to talk a bit about that, because I’ve noticed a bit of a trend.

A lot of people ask great questions and gain insights about their health, and then don’t really get anywhere or see any improvements. And I want to make sure you don’t fall into that trap.

You might already know how to heal yourself

When someone asks me a question, I like to try and put it back on them and ask…

“Well, what do you think you need to do?”

Then they usually give me really good answers. Answers that I know would at least be a step in the right direction to solving or improving their health. So, it’s clear that they’ve done the research and already have the information they need.

But when I ask if they’ve tried making a change, they usually haven’t.

Why aren’t more people improving their health even if the answer is right in front of them?

It’s the age of over-information

I believe that we are living in an age of over-information. We’re addicted to learning and absorbing more and more information.

Someone will come to me with an issue, like an enlarged prostate, for example. I’ll start to explain that they can fast and then eat Brazil nuts, which have selenium (good for the prostate).

And then almost before I’m even finished explaining, they’ll move onto another issue, like their kidney or something.

It’s like we get so caught up in needing the information for everything. We’re addicted. And we’ve got about a hundred different ways to get our fix:

  • We can go online and read blogs
  • We can watch YouTube videos
  • We can watch a documentary
  • We can read books
  • We can ask an expert
  • We can ask our family and friends
  • We can search in forums and Facebook groups

And it creates this overwhelm of information. When in fact, a lot of the time, it’s totally unnecessary.

You already know what you need to do.

But we’ve overcomplicated it and so many people are stuck in this place of inaction. And if you really want to heal yourself, sooner or later, you’ll have to take action.

Know, do, become

Humans have been obsessed with self-improvement since, well… forever. In fact, the Ancient Greeks had a philosophy on how to better yourself:

  1. Gnosis (to know)
  2. Praxis (to do)
  3. Entelchus (to become)

I’ve talked about this process of taking knowledge and turning it into action previously.

These days though, knowledge isn’t an issue like it might have been in ancient times.

Most people already know if they drank more water, hydrated their body, and went for a walk, it would really have a positive effect on their health.

But they’re not doing it.

It’s all about consistency

In my experience, mastery comes down to a simple point: consistency.

Find one thing that resonates with you, and just be consistent about doing it every single day.

So, if you find out Brazil nuts are good for your health, create an action plan to just eat two or three Brazil nuts every single day for 30 days.

After you’ve integrated that into your life, then think about one more thing you can do every single day that’s going to lead you towards health. And then integrate it.

Just keep repeating the process and maintaining consistency.

3 steps to turn your knowledge into action

Step 1: Start with what you know

If you have the basic information on how to heal yourself and it resonates with you, that’s all you need to get started.

Step 2: Turn it into a habit

Start to practice your knowledge. What’s one thing you can do right now to improve your health? Do it right away and keep doing it for 30 days, consistently. Make it a habit.

Step 3: Review and repeat

After 30 days, you’ll know if it is working for your body, or whether to change things up. And then you can repeat the process. Make another change to your routine that will improve your health. Try it for 30 days, and then do it all over again.

If you want to heal yourself, start with what you know, and then turn it into a daily habit. That’s how you do it.

Even though it might seem small, it can have a big impact. Don’t underestimate the power of good daily habits and gradual improvements to your health.
