Why You Should Not Detox While Pregnant Or Breastfeeding

I get questions all the time from women asking about whether they can do a fast, a cleanse or a detox while they are pregnant or breastfeeding.

The reality is if you’re pregnant and want to keep that baby, you shouldn’t be doing a fast.

In my opinion, you shouldn’t be going into any major form of detoxification while you are pregnant or breastfeeding. What you should be doing is focusing on what you eat and building up as much nutrition as you can to support the growth of that baby, or to keep nourishing that baby with quality breast milk.

So first and foremost, I’m just going to say it – don’t fast while you’re pregnant or breastfeeding!

Instead, focus on eating a healthy diet (and for an optimal pregnancy, a fast or cleanse before you fall pregnant is a great idea). You need to eat the really good fats from things like avocados. Avocados are a complete whole food, and an avocado actually looks like a womb and cervix.

Funnily enough, it takes exactly nine months to grow a ripe avocado. They are one of the best foods for women when they are pregnant to give them good fats.

Vitamin D is also important for a good pregnancy, because when we go out in the sun and develop vitamin D, it’s a hormone that affects every cell of the body and really helps in the development of a fetus.

Many times when you fall pregnant, your doctor, naturopath or nutritionist will say you need prenatal vitamins. You need injections. You need vitamin K. You need, you need, you need.

The truth is, you might need those things if you’re eating Oreo cookies, processed food and dead things.

But if you’re eating greens, vegetables and fresh fruits, you’re hydrating your body, you’re getting out in the sun and you’re doing some stretching and moving your body, you really don’t need these things. Good foods contain all the nutrients you need.

Now I do have a product called Greens. It’s alfalfa, barley grass and wheat grass, and this actually contains all the B12, vitamin K, vitamin D, vitamin A, all the B vitamins and minerals. It literally contains everything.

If you do want a supplement, you can take this. (I don’t believe it’s a supplement because it’s not an extract. It’s actually a whole food. I call it a compliment!).

So instead of supplementing your diet, you can complement your diet with very specific whole food items that can build the nutrients in your blood.

If you feel like you need folate, you can eat avocados.

If you feel like you need B vitamins, eat more bananas and fresh fruit.

If you feel like you’re lacking in something, Greens literally contains everything. So if you just somewhat eat a healthy diet, you’re not going to be lacking anything. We always recommend that people detox and nourish their bodies, so if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, focus on the nourishment.

The bottom line is, if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, don’t do a major detox but make sure you’re eating healthier foods, and that you’re healthy before getting pregnant. By eating those healthier foods, you’re going to have a beautiful pregnancy, a beautiful birth, and that baby is going to get all the nutrients it needs when it’s breastfeeding.
