Health Benefits Of Dates | Nature’s Candy

Did you know that dates are considered an ideal food and that many cultures have thrived with them as a staple in their diet (like me!)? Dates can replenish energy and revitalize the body instantly. That’s why dates have been used to break the fast during the month of Ramadan since ancient times and are recommended by the prophet Mohammed.

What's so good about Dates?

Dates contain a chemical compound called tannins. Tannins have anti-microbial (bacteria and viruses), anti-inflammatory, and anti-hemorrhagic (stops bleeding) properties. They also help the body metabolize carbohydrates, protein and fats.

They are also an excellent source of iron. Just 100g of dates (about 4 medjool dates) contains 0.90 mg of iron. Iron is important because it’s a component of hemoglobin inside the red blood cells and determines the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood.

Helping with Healing

Some ailments dates can help include sore throats, colds, bronchial catarrh (liquid in the lungs) and they have even been taken to relieve fevers. Dates are very easy for your body to digest and they also help remove waste from the body. They are high in fibre which helps with the growth of probiotics in the gut and prevents pathological organisms.

I often advise pregnant women to eat fresh or dried dates so that the muscles of the uterus are strengthened for an easier delivery. Dates are rich in minerals and contain several phytonutrients which are responsible for providing higher strength and stamina in the body. For this reason many body builders also eat good amounts of dates prior to a workout because they provide them with energy and strength to workout longer.

Dates have great medicinal value for growing children, young girls and pregnant women. Dates boost your immunity and help keep hormones balanced so are great for irregular menstrual cycles.

In certain traditions it’s believed that dates, fresh or dried, help improve your physical stamina as well as libido. Having a smoothie with banana, dates, and nuts (I love a small handful of cashews, almonds and walnuts) daily will make you feel like Superman (or Superwoman)!!
