A Short Term Fasting Diet That Helps You To Lose Belly Fat, Become Smarter And Live Longer

As you guys know I’m a huge proponent for fasting and I’m always excited to see new studies coming out all the time on the benefits of fasting. I don’t like using the term fasting diet, as I see this as a way of living not a diet, but hey it’s just the term the researchers have come up with in this case.

So this latest study that was done by the University of Southern California shows that even periodic fasting of only a few days every month reduced abdominal fat, made people smarter and increased longevity. They called this a Fasting Mimicking Diet (FMD), because of the short time period and in some cases there is still a caloric intake.

This particular study reduced calories by 34-54% of a normal intake for a period of 5 days twice a month. The result was reduced amounts of IGF-1 in the bloodstream. This is a promoter for aging and cancer susceptibility so lower amounts is a very welcome result. The fasting in this study also “increased hormone IGFBP-, and reduced biomarkers/risk factors linked to diabetes and cardiovascular disease, including glucose, trunk fat and C-reactive protein without negatively affecting muscle and bone mass.”

So basically FMD reduced abdominal fat but not muscle mass and it also increased the levels of circulating stem cells. “It’s about reprogramming the body so it enters a slower aging mode, but also rejuvenates you through stem cell-based regeneration,” Head researcher Longo said.

The study suggested that FMD can be done as infrequently as every 3-6 months and still yield benefits but obviously the more frequent the better. This was a pilot study and there will be more studies done off the back of this which is great news for those of us who want to get everyone to experience the benefits of fasting.
