Ylang Ylang | Therapeutic and Medicinal Uses by Coach Rina Cohen

The Ylang Ylang botanical name is ‘Cananga Adorata’, and its origins are from Madagascar Ecuador.  This tropical flower is a beautiful, bright, yellow colour and shaped similar to a star, with an exquisite aroma that is both flowery and sweet. Ylang Ylang means ‘flower of flowers’, and in some cultures, the flowers have traditionally been used to cover the beds of newly wed couples on their wedding night (refer to #7 for uses below).

A more modern use for Ylang Ylang has been to use the flowers, through a steam extraction method, to produce a distilled oil, commonly known as Ylang Ylang essential oil.

The French chemists, Garnier and Rechler, first discovered this oil made an effective treatment for malaria and intestinal infections. They also noted Ylang Ylang had a calming effect on the heart during times of distress.

Therapeutic Compounds

• Alpha-Farnesene – a fragrant terpene that benefits muscle relaxation and is an anti-inflammatory, antifungal and antibacterial
• Beta-Caryophyllene – a dietary cannabinoid known to help relieve anxiety and pain, reduce cholesterol and treat seizures
• Caryophyllene – a stress, anxiety and pain-relieving terpene
• Germacrene – noted for its antimicrobial and insecticidal properties

In the Philippines, Ylang Ylang has been used to treat cuts, burns, scrapes, snake and insect bites.

On a whole, Ylang Ylang’s medical properties are considered to be antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, antiparasitic and can be effective at regulating the heartbeat. It has a positive effect on immune health, blood flow and emotions, making it a great natural remedy for the reproductive, digestive, cardiovascular and endocrine systems.

Uses for Ylang Ylang Essential Oil

1. Regulate blood pressure: dilute 1 drop with a carrier oil and apply topically over your heart.

2. Promotion of skin health: combine 2 drops with equal parts of coconut or jojoba oil and apply topically to the area of concern, twice daily.

3. Boost your mood and energy: combine 2-3 drops with a carrier oil and massage onto your temples and the back of your neck.

4. Balance hormones: combine 2 drops with 2 drops of lavender essential oil and apply topically to the back of your neck and on your lower abdomen.

5. Lessen frustration and anger: diffuse or inhale to help wash away frustration.

6. Encourage self-confidence: inhale directly, diffuse or apply to your wrists and the back of your neck.

7. Natural aphrodisiac: diffuse or apply topically to your temples, wrists or the back of your neck.

My Fav Uses of Ylang Ylang Essential Oil

Aromatically
I put 3-6 drops of Ylang Ylang essential oil into the water of my oil diffuser, or place a drop of it in my palm and cup my hands over my nose, inhaling and exhaling deeply.

Topically (dilute at 1:1 ratio)
I mix 3 drops of Ylang Ylang essential oil with 3 drops of a pure carrier oil and apply it on the chakra points (aligned with the endocrine system) or massage on my body where I need it.

Blended
My favourite Ylang Ylang essential oil blend is to mix equal amounts of Ylang Ylang, Jasmine and Vanilla essential oils and apply to my pulse points. Smells so much better than perfume!

Remember, with all essential oils ‘less is more’ and to always patch test first when applying directly to your skin. Ylang Ylang is so powerful that using excessive amounts could cause headaches and nausea.

This beautiful smelling essential oil makes for a great Valentine’s Day gift for yourself to share with your significant other. Ylang Ylang’s fragrance balances male and female energies, enhances spiritual attunement and restores confidence and peace.

Ylang Ylang essential oil is nature’s gift, and to me a catalyst of love in a bottle. Its name even makes a lovely sound when said out loud…
